Session 1 Part 4
Audience: We have three questions.
What is our goal after love of God, is it to merge with God, or what is it after that?
Babaji: What is love? It’s a relationship between two persons; and if love is spiritual, like everything spiritual, it is eternal. There is never a time when it begins or ends. Therefore the individuality that we experience within ourselves, the personality that we feel—“I am so-and-so”—these are the eternal qualities of the soul. And because they are eternal qualities of the soul, they’re also eternal qualities of God.
Anything that can change is material, so if we are not merged with God right now, then it can never happen. We’re individuals now; that means we’re always individuals, in the past and in the future. You cannot show any evidence that this personality or individuality is ever lost. This is a theory only. It is like the scientists have their theory about the big bang, because they have no knowledge. They can’t go there to the time of the creation. So they speculate something just answer people’s questions. “Oh, there was a big bang.”
One time I saw a funny cartoon, it showed a construction site, and there were a whole bunch of guys with hats and tools, all kinds of trucks and so on—a regular construction site. So there was one guy with a dynamite thing, and you could see the cord going down into the construction site, and there is a big pile of wood and bricks and everything. And he is getting ready to blow it up, and there is a big sign: “Big Bang Construction Company.” Did you get it?
You cannot build something by blowing stuff up. So, [when] we look at the universe, we see how beautiful, how well-designed, how [there is a] delicate balance between so many different functions. This is not achieved by random chance. This is not achieved by blowing something up. It’s achieved by very careful construction. Just like if we build a building, human beings have to use so much intelligence and so much cooperation. There has to be a plan, and everyone has to follow that plan. Otherwise it turns out all crazy.
So similarly in the bigger things, this same thing is true. There is infinite intelligence behind this universe. And there is also an infinite intelligence behind the human being. The design of the human body is incredible, it’s amazing. It’s a very wonderful instrument, which is like this computer, to so much intelligent men, so much research and development, planning, economics, to make this thing possible. Similarly to make something as wonderful as the human being possible, you must have great intelligence, and great cooperation, not only of God, but many other beings as well. This is logical.
So when we talk about love or anything spiritual—let me make a point here first. When the soul enters the body, life, growth, intelligence, personality, individuality etc, all the qualities of the soul are manifested at once. And among those is the ability to love. And at the time of death, consciousness, life energy, activity, mind, will, love and so on—the same qualities disappear at the same time.
What’s the difference between a living body and a dead body? The chemicals are all there. I mean if it’s a natural death and not an accident or something, all the chemicals and all the parts are still there. In fact I just read a report that if a person has a heart attack and their heart stops beating, the heart cells don’t begin to die for two hours. They’re working on new techniques now based on this research. And what actually kills the cells is when they give the oxygen too soon. So the cells are even still living, but if that person doesn’t get a very special treatment, they’re dead.
In the natural world without hospitals and so on, they would be dead, they would be considered finished. What’s the difference between death body and the living body? It’s only the presence or absence of the soul. So all these qualities—consciousness, life, personality, love, activity and so on—are symptoms of the soul. That means they’re eternal: no beginning, no end. Try to be rigorous in your thinking, understanding the difference in qualities between materialistic and spiritual things.
See, this is the real spiritual philosophy. Nobody can give the scientific definition of what is material and what is spiritual. They’re all speculating: “Oh, it’s something about energy” etc. This impersonal theory is not based on anything scientific, because the qualities of the soul, they are personal, they’re all based on personal, personality, individuality.
Because people who don’t have complete knowledge are frustrated in solving the problems of life, they make a theory that we give up our personality and merge with God. But it’s just a theory; nobody can show a person who is in that state. If it would be possible at all, such a person would simply become like a stone, a doll; no activity, no desire, no energy, nothing, just nothing.
I mean we have people like that in coma, it’s called a coma, the soul leaves the body, but somehow the body is kept alive either by medicines or some other arrangement. And there is no activity, no personality, and no communication. That’s what someone would be like if they actually merged with God. I mean, is that very desirable? I mean, maybe it’s some kind of solution to the problems of life. But it’s a solution that requires giving up all the good things about life. Just make us nothing; what kind of solution is that? I don’t accept it.
I enjoy being a person, I enjoy having relationships, and I enjoy my activities, my knowledge. I don’t want to give these things up. A real solution to the problems of life has to give us more pleasure, more enjoyment, more activities, more power, more knowledge, more everything. The real solutions to the problems are spiritual knowledge and love of God.
Have you ever been in love? Is in it wonderful? There is only one problem, it doesn’t last.
Audience: It’s material.
Babaji: Exactly, everything material is temporary. So, if we love a material person, that has a beginning and an end. But our love affair with God is eternal, and when we learn to cultivate and relish that wonderful eternal relationship, then we get high just like being love, because we are in love. We are in eternal love; that love never ends, because we’re in love with the perfect person. Someone who would never leave us, who wouldn’t do anything wrong, who never be a fool, someone who has all good qualities and perfection in an unlimited way.
So how could that ever compare with any of the merging or losing the individuality? There is no comparison. It is not possible to convince someone who has tasted this love of God to accept any other path or solution. My Spiritual Master used to say, “If you have a million dollars, all your ten-dollar problems are solved.” So when we get God, it’s like having a million dollars. It’s like just you forget about all these silly little problems. They all just kind of disappear, because you have something so wonderful. You can’t imagine anything better than that. Just like it’s said, “When one finally achieves concentration on the personality of God, one who has got this gain, thinks there could be no greater gain.” It could be no greater gain. Nothing could possibly better than this.
Audience: The essence of love of God and the essence of love within us is the same, because it comes from Him.
Babaji: Yes precisely.
Audience: So, if we come from Him, we can reach Him through love, and that’s everything we have to do in this world?
Babaji: Yes, and in the next section in the course we’ll give the method on how to revive this love.
Audience: Who is your spiritual Master?
