Babaji: Others used to have a certain amount of privacy, but we can’t count on that anymore. But tomorrow there could be a flare from the sun, and all this stuff stops working. So, is there really anything that we can count on one hundred percent in this material world?

Audience: On ourselves.

Babaji: Let me give the answer. Why? Why, because the soul is eternal. The soul and everything spiritual is fundamentally different in quality, because it’s eternal. Let me give you an example; if I say, “The principal symptom of the soul is consciousness,” is there ever a time when that’s not true? Is there ever a situation or condition when that’s not the case? Is there any person for whom that is not the way the soul works? No!

If I say “God is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient,” is there any time, place, condition, state, situation when that’s not true? No!

So, this is spiritual knowledge. This is a fundamentally different kind of knowledge, a different kind of truth, a different quality of knowledge, all Absolute Truth, unconditional truth, spiritual truth. That’s what spiritual means. It’s eternal, unconditional, always true, always existing, never created, never dies, never destroyed, unborn, undying, eternal, unconditional truth. So that’s the difference between theological speculation and Esoteric Teaching.

The real esoteric Master is completely comfortable with Absolute Truth. We have access to an ocean of Absolute Truth. If you take all the knowledge in the world about material things—which is a lot of information, especially with computers now—all that knowledge is insignificant compared to the ocean of absolute truth. Let me give you an example: suppose I strap a camera to my head, and I start recording everything about my life. There actually some people who are crazy enough to do this. That would be so much information, right?

And I’m just one person, but consider this; in the whole time the universe has existed since the beginning, millions and billions or years, this body did not exist; and after this body dies, for millions and billions of years in the future, this universe exists, well will this body exist? No! So, the whole existence of this body, which looks like such a big amount of time to us, it’s actually just a tiny, tiny moment in the life of the whole universe.

So, if we look from the point of view of eternity, everything in this world is just insignificant. Insignificant; nothing that happens in this life or in this world can harm the soul, nothing can kill the soul, nothing can chain us forever, and if we know the science of the soul, or how to meditate on consciousness, we can free ourselves from anything, no matter how difficult the problem is, because consciousness is the key to everything.

Consider this: if I hit you on the head and you go unconscious, then does anything matter? Right now we have so many important things going on; but if we’re unconscious, are any of them important? No! We can’t see anything, hear anything, think of anything, feel anything, do anything, have anything, and go anywhere. All those things require consciousness; without consciousness, everything that’s important ceases to be important.

So how important is consciousness? Because without consciousness, nothing is important. Consciousness gives the importance to everything that we consider important. Therefore consciousness is the fundamental thing of life. It is the basic experience on which all other experiences are built. Therefore consciousness is absolutely the most important issue of life, because without it nothing is important.

Audience: The consciousness comes from the soul? Because if not, the conscious body would not have fundament to be, because the consciousness comes from the soul. Right?

Babaji: Exactly, consciousness is the principal symptom of the soul. The other symptoms are life energy, growth, activity, mind, will, sense perception, action, emotion, creativity, personality, individuality, and so many similar things like intelligence, discrimination, learning etc. Do you follow? So, the materialists are trying to tell us that consciousness is due to some kind of combination of chemicals in the brain. Now the same people had so many millions of tons of chemicals, and they’ve had hundreds of years in the laboratories, but they cannot show how to mix chemicals and create consciousness.

They can show how you can mix chemicals and kill somebody; they’re very good at that. But they can’t show how to give life, because only the soul can do that, only spirit gives life. And when the soul comes into the body of the time of conception, then the reproduction of the cells begins, the egg begins to grow into a fetus, the fetus becomes a baby. It comes out of the womb and becomes an infant, and then a child and then a teenager, and then an adult. Finally the body grows old. Why? Why does the body grow old?

It’s material; everything material grows old. But does the soul grow old? No! Never. The soul never changes, nothing eternal ever changes. It’s like eternal truth, just like God. That’s the difference between material and spiritual. You cannot find anyone, accept an esoteric Master, who can explain the difference between material and spiritual in a few words. Why? Because the esoteric Master is self-realized! In other words, this is not just philosophy, this is not theology, this is not speculation: it is direct perception of the soul by spiritual consciousness.

So, why do I bring that up? “Secret Teachings of Jesus,” all right who is Jesus? He is an esoteric Master! He is more than that, even. But we’ll get to that later. But at the very minimum, he is an esoteric Master, and we’re in the disciplic lineage from him. And we have also realized many of the same things. So we’re talking also from our own experience. This isn’t theory, this is not philosophy, it’s not logic, it’s not reason. It’s direct perception.

Audience: The question is, there is a problem here locally in Mexico about abortion. They consider abortion to be, they want to put abortion legal before three months manifestation, so when is the soul within the body?

Babaji: If growth is present, the soul is present; because growth does not happen without life, and life is a symptom of the soul. So, that’s not my place to be involved in politics, because.

Audience: Is that we have the knowledge, not politics.

Babaji: Exactly, if we have the knowledge, then we can make intelligent decision. And we don’t have the knowledge, we can be manipulated by politicians in one way or the other. What did Jesus say? “Render unto Caesar;” what is Caesar’s? So, the politicians and other powerful people may have authority over the body, but only God has the authority over the soul.

Audience: What’s the difference between spirit and soul?

Babaji: What’s the difference between the water and the drop?

Audience: No difference!

Babaji: Well, the difference is in quantity, right? Spirit is the substance, and the soul is the atomic particle of that substance. What is an atom? The smallest particle of any substance that retains all the qualities of that substance. For example, the particle of light is called photon. The photon has all the qualities of light, but the source of the photon is the sun, even though from here we can’t see the sun directly, we can see the light coming, and it has the qualities as the sun. The difference is in quantity. The whole sun is brilliant, shining; we can’t even look at it. But this light is less, but is also the same quality, heat, light, quantitative behaviors, radiant energy and so on.

So, the spirit soul is in the body in atomic quantity, but because the spirit soul is visible in the body, we know some place there has to be the source of that energy. Just like when we see the light, we know indirectly the sun is there. When we see a drop of water, we know that somewhere there is an ocean. Similarly when we perceive the soul, we know God exists, because there has to be a source for the energy. There has to be a reservoir of that particular emanation. If that’s true in the material world, then it’s also true in the spiritual world.

Audience: Does that mean that supreme consciousness and the individual personal soul have a different capacity of perceiving things?

Babaji: Of course, the difference between one photon and the whole sun is an enormous. One photon, you can’t event see it with your eye, it requires a very sensitive detector. Similarly the soul is one individual consciousness. God is unlimited consciousness. Now if we look again at the photon, all the symptoms of the sun are there, but in tiny, tiny quantity. So, similarly all the same symptoms that we observe in the soul must be present in God, because he is the source. The difference is only quantity.

So we are persons, we are conscious, we are individuals, we are active, we have desire, and so many more symptoms, because of the presence of the soul. So we can understand those same symptoms are present in God, but in unlimited quantity. That’s the secret of the soul.

Audience: If the soul was created for something, what is the ultimate goal of the soul?

Babaji: Well, let’s make a proper question first. The soul is not created. The soul exists eternally with God. Anything that is created has to die. Anything that has a beginning has an end. Everything material is limited in time. But the spirit is not. Eternity means forever in the future, but also forever in the past. So we exist eternally along with God; we’re never created, the soul is never created.

OK, now that that is understood, we can only say now: “What is the purpose of the soul?” That purpose also has to be of the same quality. It’s very important that we understand this issue of quality. Material means temporary, limited, imperfect. Spiritual means eternal, unlimited, and perfect. So the purpose of the soul has to match in quality.

So the purpose according to all the scriptures of the world, our purpose is to serve and to love God. That purpose has no beginning and no end. It has no limitation and no imperfection. It can be performed in any condition or any state by any person; all we need is the desire. And to anyone who has this desire, the means are revealed. Like, why are you here today?
