Secret Teachings of Jesus

May 6, 2007: Session 1 Part 2

Babaji: So, you verified that the process works, that’s scientific. If I have recipe, step-by-step I follow the instructions, and I get the result, then I’ve verified it. It doesn’t matter if anybody else knows about it or not. See, I mean Omar shared his feelings, but everybody had their own feelings, whether they shared them or not. Those were real, weren’t they?

See, we have a cultural thing in the West that says if it can’t be verified physically, then it’s not real; it’s all in your mind. It’s only in your mind. “I’m not feeling very happy today.” “Ah it’s only in your mind.” But it’s my mind, so it’s affecting me, and if does not affect you, maybe you don’t care, but I care.

So, the condition of our mind and our emotions is very important to each one of us. Now maybe no one else in the world is going to know, but we know. We know our own heart and our own mind, because we’re conscious. Think about it; when you were a little baby, just a little baby, did you have feelings?

Audience: Of course!

Babaji: Now, do you have feelings? When you are my age you are going to have feelings. Is there anybody older than me here? When I am an old man, I’m going to have feelings. It doesn’t matter the body, it doesn’t matter the condition the body is in, the age, the sex, the health or disease, as long as we’re alive we have feelings, as long as we’re alive we have consciousness, and the consciousness never changes. The context of the consciousness may change, just like if I watch one channel on the TV, and if I don’t like that channel, I can change to another program. Or if I am on the computer and I am on the internet, I don’t like what I’m seeing, I can go to another site. I can change the context of my consciousness. But consciousness itself is always the same.

I have awareness, and I have an object of awareness, and then I have the consciousness itself which is the relationship between them. These three things are always there, consciousness, the object of consciousness, and the context of the consciousness. It is always there, just like the sky. The natural state of the sky is clear and pure. But sometimes clouds come, sometimes rain and wind, sometimes there is a hurricane, dust, all kinds of contamination might come. But ultimately the sky returns to its pure clear nature. The sky is never really permanently changed.

Similarly the consciousness is always the same. Some days we’re happy, some days we’re sad. When we’re young, we don’t know anything. When we get older, we learn so many things. Then again when we get really old, we forget everything again. So, so many thoughts are coming and going, but still the consciousness always remains the same. Awareness, pure awareness, just like the sky. And just like the sky it is most beautiful when it’s clear and pure, similarly our consciousness is the most beautiful when it’s clear and pure.

When consciousness is conscious of itself, it generates a pleasurable state that we call meditation. Everybody likes to daydream, meditate, without any particular goal. It’s very pleasant. Why? Because our consciousness is focused on our consciousness. Actually consciousness is always like that. This is called self-referential. Did you have a question?

Audience: Is this state of pure consciousness depending on the free will we have?

Babaji: Of course! We have control over our consciousness. That is going to be my next point. I like when somebody is one step ahead, that’s always a good thing. I can choose to look at this side of the room or that side of the room. I can choose to think deeply, or become involved in the sense activities. I have free will. The problem is, we don’t understand consciousness very well, so we don’t understand how to manage it very well.

It’s just like; if I have a computer or some other high-tech machine. I don’t really understand how it works. If something goes wrong, I panic because I can’t fix it. I need to call an expert. So, this is our problem in our Western culture. We all have consciousness, we’re all spirit souls; but the science of consciousness, science of spirituality has been lost.

I think I talked in the preview about how it got lost, so I don’t want really to into that again, because it’s kind of an old story. But somehow or other, the original knowledge of consciousness is missing. And instead all we have is philosophical speculations.

So I would like to give you a very simple explanation of the science of the soul. What is the soul? Where does he come from? What are his properties and abilities? Where does he go? How does it work?

So, first of all, we have to understand that the soul is eternal. The soul is not subject to the changes like the body. I made the point a few minutes ago, that the consciousness is the same in childhood, grownup and old age. Everybody has consciousness, but the context of the consciousness may differ. That what really determines whether you are happy or sad, successful or unsuccessful, wise or foolish is how we manage the context of our consciousness.

A lot of the consciousness that we have is ruled by fear, because who is there who is not afraid of death? So, because death is coming, we have to rush and do so many things, or we might not have the chance. Is in it? Yes, because we thing; I am this body. If we understand really; I am a soul, then we would understand; wait a minute, if I don’t get around in this life time, I am eternal, so I can do it in another life time. What’s the problem? I don’t have to have everything right now. Where do we get this idea anyway? From advertising!

Buy now.” Isn’t it? They’re trying to sell you something: “Hurry, hurry, hurry; come on, come on, come on!” So, we should understand that when ever we feel time pressure, this is an illusion to make us feel unhappy, made by someone who is trying to manipulate us to do something. Like, “Pay your bills on time, or you will be in default.” Or “Buy now, while supplies last.” They’re trying to manipulate us.

So because we don’t know the science of the soul, we accept it. What is the beer commercial? “You have to live with all your gusto you can.” Do you have that commercial here? You don’t have it; it is just in the United States. Anyway, all the commercials are the same. They have the same principle.

So because the soul is immortal, eternal, and can never be destroyed, it does not follow the same rules as material things. Everything material has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It comes to existence in a certain time; it lasts for a period of time; then it dies or falls apart, or breaks, and becomes transformed in something else. The leaves fall from the trees, and then they turn into soil, and more trees can grow. That’s the material world, everything is constantly changing.

But the soul is always the same. The soul is always consciousness. Even though sometimes our consciousness may be of deep sleep, sometimes of dreams, sometimes of so-called waking consciousness. And then there is real consciousness, when consciousness is conscious of itself. Why do I call that real consciousness? Because we can be conscious of our own consciousness in any condition, at any time, and the result is always the same. That our consciousness increases, and we feel better.

Audience: Isn’t that a very lazy style. If I am immortal, then I’ll do it later.

Babaji: Except for one thing, enlightenment. Enlightenment is the one thing we cannot put off until tomorrow, or until the next lifetime or whatever, because we have problems, right? Remember, that’s why we are all here, because we have problems, we need more knowledge. So if we get the knowledge to attain complete enlightenment, that’s the solution to all our problems.

What is the difference between ordinary knowledge and spiritual knowledge? Can anybody tell me?

Audience: Ordinary knowledge is what we learn every day with our mind. Spiritual knowledge depends on each person’s development of the soul by meditating, or religious practice, or something like that.

Babaji: Hmm, that’s part of the answer. What is the qualitative difference between material and spiritual knowledge?

Audience: Material ends with life; spiritual knowledge reaches elimination that is eternal.

Babaji: That is what I like to hear. Everything material is temporary, including truth. If I say, “Oh the weather is beautiful,” is that true?

Audience: In this moment.

Babaji: What if we have a thunderstorm? What if we have a hurricane? Then is it true? No. So, all material knowledge is like that. Remember my experiment when I dropped the thing and it falls down. Does it always fall down?

Audience: Yes, on this planet.

Babaji: What if we are in orbit? Does it fall down?

Audience: No.

Babaji: So, there is always an exception, there is always a condition that determines if the material knowledge is true or false, according to their context. This is called conditional truth, or relative truth.
